About Me

A one woman shop..new on the scene.

Before I start...I would just like to say....I love creating new fashion by up-cycling old clothes....It is one of my favorite things to do.....

.Prairie Child All my pieces are one of a kind. No two will ever be alike.... as I am constantly looking for different blouses, doilies, buttons, lace and ribbons. I love mixing and matching colors so all items will truely be unique!

I use an a 1919 Singer treadle sewing machine.I sew barefooted with an old radio playing in the background and a little antique fan blowing gently over my shoulder...

WELCOME TO MY LITTLE PART OF THE WORLD...I enjoy taking a dress, blouse, shirt or skirt and just... Rip It Apart!!!I then add old crochet doilies and buttons, lace and rhinestones, pieces of tattered ribbon, bits of other blouses, most anything that I think will bring the piece together...Each piece has its own simple beauty.

Now, after all that... I MAY tea dye everything to make each piece truly unique....Tea makes some pieces darker then others...

There may be an imperfection in the fabric such as a little hole or tare...if I don't like it it ...I will cover it with a piece of lace or tattered fabric...which just enhances the overall piece..

.I WILL ON OCCASION ADD PIECES WITH COLOR..My BOHEMIAN PRAIRIE line is create the same way as the tea dyed line...only Many colors are used to create this colorful line. So do keep an eye out...to see just what I created next...

I do other things beside sew, I make jewelry from found objects. I sculpt in a synthetic clay and paper mache and have worked in concrete. I weld on occasion and try most anything once...

I DO NOT USE A PATTERN...... all sizes are approximate. If the size was attached to the garment originally then that is the size listed. I will put the inches from seam to seam at the widest part of the piece, such as under the arm across the breast area...so that you can take a measurement of yourself or your favorite blouse and measure it...to get a better idea of what I am offering....I will also give measurements from shoulder to hem...if it longer in an area... that will be the longest measurement and vise-versa...

Ships: across the United States and Internationally.

PRAIRIE CHILD

REFASHION: OLD CLOTHES NEW STYLE!
As a one woman shop... I create one of a kind pieces from up-cycling old but gently used clothes into a new fashion...

"Tucked away in a historic building in the heart of Downtown Athens, Limestone County in North Alabama, Donna Brown aka Prairie Child stitches and pins and snips away at vintage and upcycles fabrics creating one of a kind clothing items.

She's been featured in Altered Couture Magazine, she has won the Alabama Fashion Alliance, https://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=204628352949046

2014 for Upcycle Artist of the year.

She has seen her custom work sent to customers all over the world. She's a phenomenal artist and creative, with a passion for the natural world and preserving much of it. Her work and her shop are often described as Athens, Alabama's "best kept secret!" but it is a secret worth sharing. When you shop Prairie Child Design, you're shopping for unique, one of a kind items that speak of only you and your individuality. Each piece is carefully and passionately born into existence and displays Prairie Child's incredible skill with her antique Singer sewing machine that she learned to sew on and still sews on to this day. Donna Brown is an original in a world of mass produced madness, and each piece reflects that spirit and life."

As an eco-friendly business I do my work in 2 artist studio spaces at High Cotton Art, Athens AL.
